Bangor University

A few Thursdays ago, I took off to Wales. It was one trek of a journey.  Something like five hours with three changes.  I arrived just as it was dusk, so I sadly missed most of the lovely scenery of gentle hills that envelope Bangor.  I found my way to my little five-and-dime hotel room.  It wasn't much of course, but it made me feel rather grown up.  What this image does not show you is my frantic writing of my paper, or rewriting and rewriting.  I revised my paper so much, I ended up having to speak off of hand-written notes.  The original print-out was nothing to what I ended up reading, and while, at first disconcerting, I have a hunch more academics do this than I think.

the five and dime. small, but all mine.
The next morning I woke up at dawn to rewrite this paper, barely had time for breakfast, no chance of ironing my shirt, scuttling out the door in the midst of rain. Fortunately Bangor University was ever so close.  I loved the beautiful architecture. It reminded me a lot of St. Andrews.

glimpse of Bangor University. so lovely.

I hurried through the front doors of my conference, and my stomach had the clenched feeling you get when you enter a room where you know absolutely no one.  I registered, took my seat, attempted to place names with faces. An eminent scholar gave a brief introduction and another gave an opening address.

And then, guess who waltzed in the door, looking like something out of a painting? Red hair, elegant, well dressed.  My old friend.

Sanna!
I hardly slept the night before I was so worried about Sanna not making it, or having difficulty with train connections, and each time I woke up, would pray, and roll over for a few more fitful hours. Sanna had flown all the way from Singapore.  Singapore to Doha, Doha to Stockholm, Stockholm to Oslo, and Oslo to London.  She overnighted on a bench in Heathrow (brave, pioneering soul), awoke at 4 a.m. to catch a 5 a.m. train to Bangor. I was so delighted and pleased to see her!

Sanna attended the whole conference and watched me give my paper.  She was the spirit of reassurance and compliability.  At one point, shes gave me this stern teacher-look she's acquired during her year of teaching, and told me in no uncertain terms that I was to leave her and to go network with the others present at this conference. A right kick in the pants. I'll never know where she finds her stores of energy and good health.  If I had just made the journey, I'd bet you both my bunnies that I'd be snivelling and sniffling and running a fever.

The conference was great.  I was able to meet so many lovely people and see such a beautiful University.  The biggest thing that I discovered is that I now had confidence.  At times with this PhD business, one can just creep along, slower than a snail, and thinking, I'm not getting anywhere, I haven't done anything. I'm chasing my tail.  But looking back at my mental attitudes toward my research this time last year, I am simply amazed.  This is from the person who was so nervous at giving papers she would physically shake and sweat through her shirt, voice shaky and uneven. If I didn't know better, I simply wouldn't know myself.

Off to Wales

I am off to a conference in Bangor today and will be exploring North Wales for the weekend.  I'm so nervous! BUT one of the best things is that Sanna will be meeting me in Bangor and attending the conference with me! So pleased to see her again. Get her for a full TEN days. Even better is that Fran is driving down on Friday and we'll make a weekend of it. Snowdonia, here we come.

+ I realize my blogging has significantly decreased in number. I like to think that's because I'm now actually working on my dissertation, but it's probably false hope.
+ Fran has possibly converted me into being a car-boot-sale aficionado. Just love them! We now go nearly every Sunday.
+ The weather has been sunny! Hot in the sun, cool in the shade, but oh, the sun!
+ Mom sent me a copy of 'Southern Living Wedding'.  It was like a light bulb. Up until that moment I had hated every second of wedding planning.  Southern Living, you have made it almost downright pleasant.
+ I have already planned my vacation home in August down to the tee including where I'd like to stop for dinner on the way home from the airport. So so excited!

Enjoy the weekend, my friends. I hear the Durham regatta is on! Should be a splash xo

Memorial Day Weekend

Memorial Day weekend was lovely.  Fran and I celebrated an anniversary on Friday.  We looked at houses on Saturday, and Sunday we headed to the car boot sale.  I found a 1950s CLUE (or Cluedo) board game which made me real excited.  And a US to metric converting bowl.  Yuss! The amount of meals I've ruined by not getting them right is pretty embarrassing. Monday we headed to a country park around Morpeth and drove along some of the roads Fran cycled last fall in his epic trip from Edinburgh to Newcastle.  We fought a load of angry swans for our picnic and found some geese and their little goslings! So cute.

This week has seen an end to invigilation. The library is now quiet again. Preparing for conferences over the summer. Still in a reading funk, but tepidly making my way through Crime and Punishment.  I love them Russians.  So wonderfully good. Missing the heat from home and wishing I were there to pick strawberries.

A Scottish wedding

At Alex and Shona's wedding-- May 18, 2013

On Saturday we headed up to Edinburgh for our first Scottish wedding. It was so lovely. We saw so many familiar faces, had so many hugs and catch-ups, so many congratulations-- it made us realize how very long indeed it has been since we did live in Edinburgh (July 2012) and far too long since we visited our church. Such a family, such a home.

The wedding itself was lovely.  I cried more than once.  I loved the kilts and the bagpipes, the lovely bridal attire, the bridesmaids dresses. The service, the hymns. My first British wedding cake. The reception was in stunning grounds. But more than all that, was simply thrilled for Alex and Shona.  It's exciting to share in someone else's brimming happiness.

---
Lately. I haven't blogged much.  I don't seem to know what to say or write.  My time is also more, compressed.  And when I write now, it's more to sort things out, to sift my thoughts.

The things we're up to.  We're looking for a place to live come January.  And I'm plodding along on my doctorate. I've invigilated (ie proctored) a handful of exams. I've finished my teaching. Several conferences simmer on the horizon.

I'm in a bit of a reading lull.  After Anna Karenina, I've tried to pick up Crime and Punishment, but it's not taking.  I'm thinking I ought to try some F Scott Fitzgerald.  Fran is tearing his way through Gatsby just now.  We've made a deal to try not to see films before we've read the books.

We've talked a lot lately about what we want things to look like. Organizing and planning others.  Dead excited for a bank holiday weekend next week.  It also marks four years since we began our travels around Europe.  The passing of time never ceases to amaze me.  And yet here we are, here we are now. I would never have fathomed it.  It's probably that which makes life so much better than books or films, that you could never have guessed it, infinitely variable, infinitely surprising.

Here are some photos from my attempt of 'photo a day' during this engagement.  Not sure I'm doing swimmingly and am really behind.  I apologize for my lack of blogging. Every time I think of coming to write something I just feel like I have nothing to say.  So perhaps, for a time, some photos will make up for my lack of words.
